PUBLIC SERVICES MAY BE COT . DOWN. Reference to a report that the Govern* )nent intends lo cut. down the salaries of Civil Servants was made in the' Hous'o of Representatives last night by Mr. I'. M. Wiiford. Ho gavo notice to ask the Prime Minister whether there was any truth in the report. Mr. Mnssey chose to answer the question out of hand. "To prevent any misapprehension," he said, "I may say that the Government lias no intention of cutting down salaries of Public Servants. It is not the intention of the Government to put any such proposal before Parliament. But 'it may be necessary for the Government to ask Parliament to cut down the public services, which is quite a different matter."
