ADVANCE BY ENEMY INFANTRY BROKEN GREAT ARTILLERY DUEL. London, October i. Sir Douglas Haig report :—"The enemy hearily bombarded this morning our positions between the Tower Hamlets and the Polygon Wood. The infantry attempter] to advance, but our artillery broke the attack on tlio hulk of the front before it reached our lines. A few men penetrated the barrage north of tlie Menin Road, but the infantry completely repulsed them, and our positions remain intact. There is a great artillery duel east of Ypres."—Aus.-N.Z. Hits were observed in three aerodromes in the Conrtrai area, and in a fourth near Cambrai. October 5, 9.5 p.m.) London, October 47. A French communique states:—"Both artilleries were-active last night on the Meuse. A French communique states:—"There Ts hand-grenade and artillery action south of Allies. An enemy coup-de-main was repulsed west of Fompelle" There is a violent artillery struggle on the right bank of the Jleuse. An attack on our trenches north of Hill 342 was repulsed. A German official report states:—"There was a powerful artillery duel throughout the night from Houthoult Wood to Ij.vs, and increased this morning to drumfire.
