MAGISTRATE'S COURT

POLICE AND OIVIL CASES. At the Magistrate's Court yesterday, Mr. S. E. M'Carthy, S.M., was on the Bench, and dealt with the police cases. Eileen O'Connor was charged that on September 7, at "Blairlogic," Masterton, she had in'her possession three pairs of shoes, valued at £o .7s. 6d., the property of Joseph Canpenter, well knowing them to have been dishonestly obtained. Chief?Detectivc Boddam,.,in asking that accused.be remanded,'to appear, at Masterton on October 10, stated that the young woman was at work on'a sheep farm near Masterton. After her arrival in Wellington she heard there was a warrant out for her arrest'., and immediately came to the police statiou and presented herself for arrest. In the circumstances he suggested that she should be allowed bail in her own recognisances. The remand was granted, .and bail fixed at £50. • ■ , Four articled seamen,, named George Vincent, George Andrews. Isaac Emms, arid Thomas Henry Weir were charged with unlawfully absenting themselves from their vessel. They all picaded guilty, and were sentenced to fourteen days imprisonment, and an order was made that they be handed over to the captain of. the ship on demand. For insobriety a first offender was fined 10s. in default 24 hours' imprisonment. A' miner named James Mlnerney was charged with failing to notify change of abode, as required by the Military Service Act. Mr. P. W. Jacltson appeared for the defendant. If was shown in evidence that accused enlisted for the Fifth Reinforce, ments, went into camp, and was finally rejected by the- Medical Board as unfit because he was suffering from miners complaint. He then worked in the Nelson district, and before leaving there he notified the Government Statistician of his change of address, and received an acknowledgment,- which he produced Later he was drawn in the Seventh Ballot, ana subsequently posted as unable to be found. He received no notification of any kind that lis was drawn in the ballot, and did not know that he had been called until he was informed -by Sergeant Mathewson, who arrested him. After hearing further evidence it was decided to adjourn the case until to-day to.enable the police to make further inquiries.
