SUBSTANTIAL TUSE DECIDED. ON., Tho directors of . the' Wellington Gas Company have, owing ,to tho exigencies of war time, decided to_ increase tho price of gas. In an official announcement thoy state that during the year tho •cost of coal for gas manufacturing purposes has advanced by more than 50 per cent, over tho cost of last year; ttie taxation payable by tho company has been increased by upwards of JESOOO, and there has been further largo expenditure in many other directions. AH these increases are duo to war conditions, riotwithstanding this heavy additional expenditure, all of which will be still further increased in the near future, the only advance thfbt has so far been made in tho price of gas is sd. per 1000 cubic feet in April last. , It is obvious, the directors add, that ■this condition of things cannot further continue without imperilling the financial position of the company, and the directors have decided to decrease tho amount now allowable as discount off gas accounts from two shillings and ono penny (2s. Id.) per 1000 cubic feet, (o tenpenco (lOd.) nor Iflffl. ™°hing the net prion or gas six shillings and cightpenco (6s. Bd.)- per 1000 cubic feet. The new rate will como into operation from October 24 neit.
