AOTEA HOME

AN HONOURABLE. MENTION

The Minister oF Defence read to the Houfie of Representatives the following letter, which he said he had received from Mr. James Macintosh, who was interested in the Aotea Convalescent Home: "It is just two years since a smallband of ladies now forming the staff of the Aotea Convalescent Home at Port Heliopolis and Port Said left the Dominion, their services having been accepted by you. They arrived in Egypt, and the home at Heliopolis ' -was started two months later, in November I?lo. To the good w>rk done by these ladies tl'ere has been very gratifying testimony both;bv letter reports from:soldiers.and ornera in E»ypt and elsewhere, and by returned soldiers. The Imperial authorities have in a way shown their appreciation, for. the distinction of the Eoyal Red Cross ofthe Second Class has been conferred-opon. the matron, Miss M. A. Early. But of the other ladies no public mention has been made. I should be very much obliged if you can see your way to make some reference to their good work-,v/hicn, as you know, is done gratuitously. This, I venture to suggest, niightbe done from vour piece in the House on some suitable occasion. Such a mark of approval woulo: be highly appreciated by the ladies. They one and "all deseqve our very best thanks for their unselfish devotion to duty under strange and trying conditions. "I hope you may find it possiwe to nve effect to my suggestion. A list containing the names of members is enclosed: • "Matron: Sister M. A. Early, Welling"Nurses: Nurse Kate Booth, Vvaira* rapa; Nurse Nora Leslie Hughes,. AYairarapa. "General Staff: Miss Lma JlLaren, Wairarapa; Miss Mysie' M Donnell, ■\Vanganui; Miss Mina M Donnell, Wangauui; Miss Ruth Cameron, ■Wancanui; Miss Elizabeth Mac-. Donald, TVanganui. Orderly: Sergt. G. H. H. Sleight, Wnnganui, Sir James Allen said that he valued very much, as ho was sure the country would value, the work which had been done by these women. He was only too glad to place on record the names.
