Refreshment Stall for Paddy's Market. A meeting of the Citizens' Service Guild, called by the Mayoress (Mrs. ,L P. Luke), was held last evening in the Council Chambers, to make arrangements in connection with tho Tefreshnientß otall.for Paddy's Market, to be held in the Town Hall on Friday and Saturday of next week. There was a very good attendance of members, so many in fact that tho meeting, which was to have been held in the Mayoress's room, had to seek for larger space.' Mrs. Luke presided-. The proposal that all present form themselves into, a committee was moved and carried. In keeping with the whole of the urrang'emenls.'jn connection with Paddy's Market, tho refreshments- will be served outside on small tables, provided the weather will allow, and should it be unfavourable the space underneath the gallery usually reserved'a; a tearoom will be utilised. Shilling- lunch on both days will be provided between twelve and two; but as eleven o'clock is the opening timo on Friday morning, there will not be any morning lea on that day. There will be, however, afternoon tea, an,d refreshments will be obtainable right on up to nine o'clock in the evening. On Saturday morning and .afternoon tea will he served, the prices for ffhjc.it, as piv Friday afternoon, will be fit the usual rate, sixpence. _ Tho promise of a gas stove, fitted up in tlio Icitchen, had been made to Mrs. Luke,-and it would he possible to do cooking on the premises. Mrs. Barltrop was appointedsecretary to tho cominjttco. . Mrs. Luke reminded: her committee that they did not want lo incur expenses that were it) the least degree avoidable, ami a discussion followed in. regard fo the provisions that would bo needed, each member of the committee making herself responsible for certain contributions.' Ait executivo committee, constating of Miss Clark, Miss Bock, Mrs. Liddle, Mrs. Murphy, and Miss Townsend; was set up lo see 'to the acquirepient of provisions, etc. Another incetjng will be held oh Monday evening at half-past seven. Daffodil Carnival. As a result of tho Daffodil Queen Carnival, held in Nelson, a stini of ever Mm has been raised for the benefit of tho Countess of Livrnool Funds, "livery reasonable estimate had been exceeded arid lost in. the magnificent result," stated the "Lord Tligh Chancellor,'' at tho coronation of tho Queeli. The procession provided one of the best spectacular displays seen in Nelson, for a long timo. The queen candidates, tell in number, .with their attendants, all attired in tho national costumes of tho respective nations they represented, were in appropriately decorated motor-ears, and thero wero decorated wheelbarrows, baskets, etc., while the retailers wero to the fore with their mail delivery, and host of attendants. A find representation of Nelson's old flagship, Victory, was also an interesting feature. The 12th Regiment Band, Territorials, and tho National Reserve Band took part, 1 the whole making a brave display. Miss Olderehaw was elected tiuecn (reprcseqlativo of Neff Zealand). Our Day Red Cross Appeal. The ladies in charge of the pecond-hand stall at "Paddy's Market" wish to tjiaiik all thoso. donors who have- so kindly responded to their appeal for furnjturo, gold, silver, etc., and wish to notify all contributors that goods may bo sent to Levin and Cq., Store Department, addressed Mrs. Arthur Pcarce, L'addy's Market. As they are anxious to make this stall a great success, they will bo grateful if people will look through their hous-j----hold goods and spa.ro whatever they can.
The Returned Soldiers' Association in ■Wellington is instituting an annual ball. Invitations are already out i'oi' the first, which is to take place at the Town Hall on-Friday, October 12. The annual inspection of the AYellingtpn South Nursing Division was held in the Newtown Library on Tuesday evening. Tho annual re-examination will be held next Tuesday. After examining the books and work of the division, Mr. Seed expressed great satisfaction, Mrs. Lewis (Mssterton) qnd her daughters returned io the AVairaTapa yesterday from a brief visit' to Wellington. Mr. and Mrs. Couper, of Hawke's Bay, with. Miss Couper, are staying at the Hotel Cecil. They came to AVeliington to meet their-son, who has just returned to New Zealand from the front. Mr. and Mrs. AV. Cruickshunk (Masterton) are visiting Wellington. The ladies of the Patriotic Cake Room thank the following donors of cakes, subscriptions, etc:—Mesdames Smitton, J. Campbell, Kersley,' Williams Holmes, Meek, C. Palmer, Isaacs, J. I'indlay, Hurst, Adamsou, Heywood, ''Anonymous," and the Misses (2), M'Menamen, Didsbnry, M'Kellar, Kirkcaldie, Sidey, and Gambril). On Tuesday evening a concert was giyen in lift. Luke's gchoolroom, Wadestown, in aid of the Red Cross and of the schoolroom funds, the proceeds to be divided equally. ' A" excellent programme, contributed by local talent as well as by n party from town, was greatly enjoyed. Stags were, smig by Mesdames Kennedy and Cpstelio, Miss Goyder, and little Miss M'Carthy. After tho concert-supper was provided by the Wadcslown ladies.
No Nurses. The voyago of a hospital ship which arrived in New Zealand recently was marked by another departure from the usual arrangement, for, with tho exception of one sister, who specialised in massaging, there was no nursing staff aboard, the hospital work having been dono.entirely by orderlies of corps. This experiment was only made after a great deal of careful consideration and trial, but ,tho results that have accrued from the change show that the orderlies, uuder the guidance of the medical Ptnif, were able to attend to the comfort and health of the patients with every success. • The services of ' the trained nurses will bo taken advantage of in the base hospitals of England, where they are urgently needed. Sajlprs' Friend Society, A very enjoyable lime was passed at M'iss Hail-Kenny's concert at fho Savons' I'riend Society on Tuesday night. The encores were very many and insistent. Tho performers were: Mrs. Macfarlane, tho Hisses Ankettell, Barrett, While, Hall-Kenny, Elchardson, and Captain Macfarlane, and Mr. Mertvoofl. Mrs.. Macfarlane and Miss Ankettell were at the piano. Prizes in tho competition were provided by tho hostess, and went to 6tiips in port. Mr. Moore, Missioner, epote on. "The Six O'clock Question," and said he felt tho lives of many visiting sailors would be 6ave<l if it came to pass.
The engagement is announced of Miss Daphne Dryden, youngest daughter of , Mr. and Mrs. H. 15. Dryden, of Karori, to Mr. J. H. Miles, of Marton. Yesterday afternoon a sale of work organised by tho Ladies' Auxiliary of tho Junior Department of the Y.M.fi.A. vas opened in tho Y.M.O.A. Buildings by the Hon, J. G. W. Aitken. Arrangements for tho sale were carried out in tjio assembly room upstairs, drapings of (lags, in addition to the pretty deeoraliyo effeets of the stall, making the room look very bright and attraotive. Mr. Faulkner, vice-president of tho Boys' Department, was in the chair, and introduced Mr. Aitken to the gathering, at tho f-amc timo explaining the object of the bazaar, which was to refurnish the quarters of the boys' organisation and mako tho place as attractive as possible. The membership of late had greatly increased, aaid it wag found necessary to take step; in this'direction. Mr. Aitken, in opening the sale, briefly touched upon the value of the work which was done for the boys, and wished the effort all success. Mr. Varney also added a few words, and thanked Mr. Aitken for consenting to open the bazaar. The stalls were in charge of the following:—Plain stall, Mrs. Forsythe (president of the Ladies' Auxiliary of this department) and Miss Mackay (secretary and treasuror); fancy stall, Mrs. .lames, Mrs! Mulling,' Mr. Dunnett; sweets, Mrs. Osborne, Mrs. M'Cullough, Miss Laurenson; produce, Mesdaines Smith (2), Stevenson, Miss Fraser; refreshments, Mrs. Bedford, Mrs. Charters, Mrs. Shapcott; ice creams, Mr. Thomas.
