While working among consumptives in Chrisfchurch iD connection with the Government sanatorium near the city, Mies ltoehfort was struck by the faot that in many eases the children of victims had littlo clianco ui resisting the disease; if they had not already contracted it, they were opposed to grave risk of infootion, and in 6omo cases tlio parents had been taken to tho sanatorium 'and the chiidr-iii were not properly cared for. The tragedy of these children affected her deeply, ami she started a movement to found a home for lliom. attached to the sanatorium. It -woe largely owinff to tlio ability and earnestness with winch Miss liochfort pleaded the cause of the children that tho public, to whom this phase of the consumption, problem was quite hew, subscribed liberally to the fund. Her friends then suspected that Miss Kochfort was threatened with' tile disease, which for the sako of othem she fought so persistently, and it is probable that she died of it. The room is conducted weekly by members of the Y.M.C.A. Ladies' Auiiliarjy who. in addition to home-made cookery, oner for sale jams, sweets, and flowers, and a special line of cakes; prepared for sending for Christmas gifts to boys at the front. The room to-moxrow will be in charge of Mrs. Rawson and Miss Barnes. The organisers of the enterprise, Mesdames Bray, and Piper, wish to express their thanks for help received from all members of the Ladies' Auxiliary and also from. Brodie are visiting Sydney, also Mr. and Mrs. G. \\. Stead- ■ Mrs. Pelhara is visiting New Zealand, and is staying with her daughter, Lady Walker, in Auckland. Mrs. Murphy, one of the very. oner, getic workers at tho Town Hall in tho interests of the soldiers on active service, has' received a postcard from 0110 of tho men in Mesopotamia, acknowledging the reccipt of a Liverpool parcel. His appreciation is frankly enthusiastic, and he wrote that the gifts were just 0.K., and the very things he wanted. He further added that the temperature that day in the sun was 1« deg-jees and in the shade 118—quite the hottest day he had yet experienced. By permission of Messrs. J. B. Clarkson and Co., the Mayoress has been given the use for Paddy s Market Day stalls of their premises in Wakefield Street Mrs. Boss (second-hand clothing stall) will bo glad to receive articles of apparel left in theso premises from to-day onwards, and donors are asked to apply to the Mayoress for the key. Red Cross Shop Committee Meeting. A meeting of the Wellington lied Cross Shop Committee was held in the llaj;or's room of tho Town Hall yesterday nt'tcrnoon, tho Mayoress (Mrs. J. P. Luke) presiding. Accounts were passed for payment, and various matters in connection with "Our Dny" and "Paddy's Market" irero discussed. It was decided that after "Our Day" appeal was over, the committee should meet tho first Monday in the month instead of every third, as at preseni, An. excellent record of work in connection with the shop waa reported, and the secretary, Mrs, J?irth, stated that there was in the bank an amount of and had been sent to England since tho last meeting. There wero some good' days to look forward to in connection with organisations that are taking charge of and stocking the shop, and it is expected that the finances will lie very materially augmented. Owintr to the fact that "Paddy's Market" (irhick wag originally fixed for this week) had beon postponed till a week later, no particular arrangements have been made in connection with this coming Friday at the shop, and contributions will be gladly accepted. Flowers, of course, will be sold by Miss Cooper and Miss Moss, bo that in any case the room will be open. On the following Friday (next week) the'Xarori branch of the W'.N.B. will stock and be in charge of tho shop.
