ONSLOW BOROUGH

MEETING OF THE COUNCIL. The ordinary meeting, of tho Onslow Borough Council was. held on Saturday evening. ■ Tho Mayor (Mr. J. 31. -bale) presided, and there wore also presont: Councillors E. The reports of tho engineer, road loreman, and ranger were adopted. _ .. ■ • The city waterwrlcs inspectors report on the Kaiwarra water supply was submitted. It was stilted in tho report that several meters were out of order, one. such being set in the wroDg way, and registering backwards; others had ceased to register. ■ One meter was found to have been buried. The council regarded the report as a valuable one, and it was decided to refer tho matter to the borough engineer for a report. . Tho Secretary of tho Post Office -wrote stating that the Department was unable to erect a slot telephone at Ngaio ]ust at present. It was decided to deal witli the subject at next meeting. In accordance with notice, Councillor TV. Appleton moved: "That tho Onslow Council wait upon tho General Manager of the Eailways in regard to an evening train service on the Manawatu lino, and that if necessary tho council pay a sulv sidy for tho use of tho motor train. In support of his motion, Councillor Appleton stated that ho was positive that a motor-train with a trailer would pay handsomely. Ho did not think there was any shortage of men in the service now. He pointed cut that the people bought properties in tho borough in tho belief that they would havd a convenient train service. Councillor Tucker seconded tho motion pro forma, and, wished to know whether tho council conld puy a subsidy Ho was assured that the council could do so. It was suggested that there was no harm in approaching the authorities, although it was recognised that the Railway Department would view tho matter from a national standpoint, and not from the point of view of tho borough. It would be a matter of policy with tLeni, and tho Mayor thought thero was tio bono of getting over Hie policy hurdle. Tho motion was carried.
