(defender), defeating H. A. Ward (challenger,)/2—l, and ,S. Eanlknor taking rung 19 from G. 117 Clutten. (2-0). ' / It. is a year ago to-day sinco the club's former hon. secretary and treasurer, W. Cowper Hill, died in Franco Srom wounds received two days earlier. Members hold him in affectionate remembrance both for his personality and for his valued labours at a critical time when owing to various adverse causes it seomod as if the good old olub would have to be wound up. WORKING MEN'S CLUB. E. ,T. Barnes, tho club champion, is leading in this club's annual handicap tourney with tho fine record of ten clear wins. Other good scores aro: Faulknor, 8 wins 2 losses; Douglas, sJ—2ii Greig, 5—3; Eton, I—2; Hennessey, ,4-;3; and Larking, b—i. Mcmbors ore looking forward with much interest to next Monday's annual match against the Wellington South Chess Club. Of tho H matches played to date, each club has won 5 and ono match ended in a tic DRAUGHTS.' Tho combined championship and eealed handicap tourney of the Watersiders' Club has been closed, the best phiff having been shown by C. Erickson, who won tho championship with the fine score of 78 wins 0 draw 6 and only 3 losses or 82J points out of a possible 00. Tho next-best tallies are: J. Burgess (second prize),774; W. Connor (third prize), 751; W. Wright, 735-; J'. Eoid, 734; G. Wilkinson, Gtii: C. Hanson, GC; W- Cain, 651; andE. Butler, 61. Erickson is repeating tho consistency that ho has' shown, in tho watersiders' tourney, his score to date being 42 wins, 4 draws, and 2 losses, or 44 points out of a possible 48. The next best scores are; M'Pherson, 31-5; Costollo, 36-7; Connor, 37—10: Manson, '22—9; Burgess, 25—15; Larking, 24—15; Colville, 24-20; and l Wright, 21-19. . The club's annual shield match against the watersiders, which takes place tomorrow evening in the Harbour Boards X shed, is attracting more than ordinary interest, doubtless because drauglits_playing has been followed more actively by local enthusiasts during the present season than for many years past. The yatersiders, who have won strongly all the matches played in the past, are generously allowing all members who belong to. both clubs to play for the Working [ Men's Club,' this courso being in tho best interests of the game locally.
