Ihe track was slow. There was an averaue attendance. The totalisator receipts totalled £15,037, against £12,663 on tlio first day of the corresponding meeting last year. There were one or two good looking maidens run out in tho Trial Stakes. The Wallace filly Cynthcria, Master Iney, Signorella, and Polynesian all stripped well. The two latter and Cyntheria were the favourite selections. At tlje start Cynthcria and Larvol led from Backfire and Signorella. Entering the straight, the leaders compounded, and Signorella was challenged by Polynesian. The latter came away at the distance and won easily, while a rank outsider in Kahumanga beat the labourite for second honours. There wero numerous defections from inn. Jumpers' Flat Handicap. At the closing oE the machine Sleight of Hand was. a very'hot order, and ho was the good thing the machine suggested, Cor, after getting a bad run and beins in an apparently hopeless position, he came through in the straight and won very easily, , latum beat Gold Fran b.v a narrow margin, and Golden March and Maniaroa wero the next to finish. There was considerable delay on the machine and at tho barrier, and the Spring Handicap started nearly half an hour behind time. From a good dispatch Cold Painting and Hushabyc took charge, but Interlude soon ran to the front, and witn Hushabyc led .Bftlrnndalc and Trials into tho straight. At tho distance .the lieu dosed up, and in a wonderful finish Vagabond. Grossed tho line first, with Bairnedale and Dribble in the places, and Hose Pink. Kiltcas, Hushabyc, Trials, and Potentiality in a line. After tho race Settlor dropped dead in the birdcage. . . Nobleman' was the nublio choice in tne Hack Handicap, and he ran a-,600(1 race, but had no chance wil-h Kings Armour, who began smartly on tho rails,, and was nevor headed. Vormihon wasi in h f°"« place till well down tho straight, but she. failed fo see it out. Queen Lizzie rau promiuently the whole way. and was only just behind tho placed horses. ™o 'ivourito drew tho outside, but ho lan. a, good race.,and got secoud money b.v a neck from Try Again. i . .
