THE TURF
NOTES AND COMMENTS , [BY GLEKCOB.I Courtfield, tile Elysian colt in J. W. Lowe's stables, is growing into a *ery fashionable-looking youngster. He is wen forward, and will probably be given a race in public at tho Mastorton meeting. In connection with El Gallo's performances a» a jumper, it is worthy of note that C. Scott is the only horseman to win on him. A change of riders was necessitated when Scott was injured on tti« eve of the last A.K.C. Winter Meeting, but strange to say El Gallo did not appear to fence with the same conlideuce as when his aid pilot was in the saddle. Croesus, Form Up, and several other good class horses are entered for the different events at,the coming Dannevirke meetingAcceptances for the meeting close on Saturday next. This is hardly fair to owners, who complain that, were the weights and acceptances held over until after tne Matton meeting, they would have a better ides, as to whether it was worth while going on to Dannevirke As it is now. many horses will bo accepted for that will not be taken to the meeting. In these days of financial stress owners are entitled to every consideration from cluba. They (the owners) are under extra expense in every way, for they got no concessions from the Railway Department, whereas in the old ilw'a the attendants! got excursion fares and horses were paid lov one way only. This will sliow tho necessity of clubs keeping the acceptance and entry fees as low as possible, so lha., all will benefit. If this is not done racing will soon become a pastime for the rich mm only. . , „ Mr. Hi A. Goodall, secretary of the Rangitikei Racing Club, was a visitor to Wellington during the week. Mr. Fraak Rq£3, owuer of Salute, uas booked the Soult mare to visit All Black this season. The Treutham three-year-old iillics Matilda and Cooing are'to race at Marton, and will be accompanied north by Coalition. The latter schooled well at Trentham on Saturday, but so far lie jumps in a slow, careful style, and. reuuires racing to teach him to stand off at his fences. Tho P.atronus gelding was taught, to jump in the hunting field, but such a preparatory course is not always conductive to making a fast jumper, primarily because those who ride hunters are not always capable horsemen. Private advices received from Sydney state that the Martian ma.-c Bee ie amiss, and is unlikely to race at Kandwick cost month. . The Ellcrslie trainer J. Williamson booned space for sis horses for Sydney this month, but has sineo been advised by the shipping authorities that they are unable to give the required accommodation, and tho proposed trip has been abandoned. At the sale of Mr. G. D. GreonTond's stud Mr. Tan Duncan, qwner of the Waikanae Stud, took the opportunity to enrich the list of his brood marcs by the purchase of the imported mare Yicella (Ycles-Swcot Duchess) at 500 guineas.. Poirene (Achilles-Blue Water) at 160 guineas, and Conceit (Boniform—Lady Wayward II) at 110 guineas The throe marcs should make a very valnahlo addition to the Waikanao Stud, and assist in bringing it into further prominence as the birthplace of good winners. A post-mortem examination on the remains of El Oallo revealed the fact that tho Spalpeen gelding died of heart disease, lie has been buried on the hllerslic racecourse. Tn an article concerning geldings ■> recently issued pomphlnt states that Great Britain and her colonies contributed 600.000 remounts to the soldiery early in the mr. It also pointed out that the Government citation Indicates the .gravity of danger ahead, for at the. beginning of the war. when the Government dealt it? first and unnecessary And mischievous blow vt the foundation of 1 horse-breeding, any entire colts were ecldcd. as well n<* older hoivs. and therefore, were rendered useless by the'knir'o for the. work thoy were intended for, and for which racing is the only excuse. From Napier it is reported that. Elocution and Silver Tongue are doint well o'i the tracks, ahd-aro to go to Marlon. HoUi were sired '■'y Dcmostiionos, and were useful two-year-olds. A good many of last season's two-year-olds will make their initial appearance, this term at Marlon. Those pnsaeed include Lingerie, Chuckle, Silver Tongue. A';re. Cooinu. flrowhuret. Elocution, Lady Beaufort, and RuHe. Nominations for the OtnM Club'; Spring j;..<;tinn- c l 0 ?e on Monday next. ■R. MASeveney. who rode Master Strowan to visiory in the Grand National Steenlcchapc. will again have, the mount on Mr. F S. Faeton's horse at Jtnrlon next week.
