SAILORS' FRIEND SOCIETY

ANNIVERSARY MEETING. The anniversary meetinjr of the Sailors' Friend Society was held on Tuesday. Tho Hon. G. W. Ruesoll, Minister of Marine, presided over a fair attendanco. Among t'lioso present were:—Messrs. C. H. Poole, M.P., Dr. J. K. Elliott, and the miesioner (Mr. Jainas Moore). The Minister of Marine congratulated those connected with the institution upon the manner in which tho money given by the founder, Mrs. Williams, was spent. Most Beamen, on coming ashore, were as strangers in a strange land, and if they happened to be shy, as many wero, the only place to which they could ro for recreation was the publicliouse. It was the duty of the community to provide n. counter-attraction to the pnblicliouse. In this connection he mentioned a mattor that would shortly be before Parliament—tlio question of shortening the hours in which hotels wero to be opon. It was tlie duty of those wh.o interested themselves in, our seamen to see that there was what ho doscribed as a counterattraction, so that if hotels were closed at a much earlier hour, as no doubt they would bo, some better placo would open its doors to the men, and provido shelter, society, and recreation. Mr. Moore addressed the gathering upon tho naturo of tho work at the institution.

Mr. Poole moved:—"That this mission be commended to the practical and prayerful sympathy of tho public" Dr. Elliott seconded the resolution, which was carried by acclamation.

Tho meeting also carried the following luoLion:—"That the mosting oppresses its satisfaction at ithe glorious self-denial and valour shown by our sailors in. the mino areas, and in all Seas, and commends thorn to tho safekeeping of our Heavenly Father, and prays for His comfort, sympathy, and support for tho dear ones of those who have made the last great sacrifice." Tho following ladies and gentlemen contributed items to a musical programme:—Tho Orphans' Quartet, consisting of Messrs. R. Meates, B. Sims, H. 1 , . Wood, and W. Goudie, Mrs. Wood, and Misd fithol Church. Miss Cliaddick acted as atcoiniJMiist.
