INSTITUTE OF ACCOUNTANST

ANNUAL MEETING. Tho twenty-fourth jljinual meoting of ■the Incorporated Institute of Accountants of New Zealand was held yesterday afternoon. In tho absence of the president (Mr. C. P. Powles), through illness, Mr. H. D. Vickery (vice-president) took tho chair. There were about twonty members present.

The annual report of the council stated that during the year 1,6 new associates had been admitted to membership of the institute by virtue of their having passed the Sxamination conducted by the University on behalf of the New Zealand Society of Accountants. The membership of the institute at the beginning of the year was 377, consisting of 201 fellows and 167 associates. At the end of the year the number of members on the register was 382 (a record for tho institute), and consisted of 216 fellows and 1G(! associates. Five fellows and one associate died during the year, three of them in the defence of their country— Messrs. F. A. Allen and .1. O. Foster (follows) and Mr. H. Kershaw (associate). At the last annual meoting it was decided to renew for one year tho grant of .£IOO to tho University Colleges in the foii,r centres. through tho Society of Accountants. This amount had been paid during the yeivr and brought the amount paid for this purpose to X6OO. The report added that it was doubtful whether an adequate return had> resulted. ' Tho annual statement of accounts showed that at the end of the financial year thesnstitute had ,£350 invested on first mortgage of freehold property, £300 on fixed deposit, £100 in war certificates, and a credit balance in cosh of £28 4s. 9d. The excess of income over ordinary expenditure for the year was .£l2O 3s. Bd., but on account of the grant of £100 to the New Zealand Society of Accountants towards tho subsidy, to the University Colleges, this was Teducod to £20 3s. Si! The accumulated funds now stand at .£773 15s. od. The outstanding subscriptions (owed by one member only) amount to £1 lis. 6d.; £36 15s. had been remitted on account of members on active service for subscriptions due for tho last two years. The annual roport and balance-sheet were adopted. The chairman referred to the greatpublic work done by leading accountants in England in connection with the war, and instanced Sir .Tames Plcnilerand Mr. Leever in particular. Ho urged that there was scope for accountants here in New Zealand if,the Government would give the opportunity. , • Mr. Powles was re-elected president and Mr Vickery vice-nresident. Messrs. W. W. Bruce' (Auckland), H. Bicknell (Christchurch) P. Barr (Dnnedin). and 15.. J. Harvey. (Blenheim) were elected members of the council. The admission to membership of the 'institute was approved. It was decided to invest another £100 in the War Loan.
