GRAND NATIONAL MEETING

CONCLUDING DAY SANDY PAUL'S BIG STEEPLECHASE SYDENHAM HURDLES WON BY BON REVE. (From Our Special Correspondent.) v The Canterbury Jockey Olub'e Grand ftjlional Meeting was concluded in Saturday, in glorious weather, and with a large attendance. Tho course was in flrstrdass oraer. Tho totalisator investments for the day were £55,«9 10s., compared" with •£49,377 on tho concluding, day last year, the total for tlio two days being £106,796 10s., against £138,959 Jast year, when tho meeting extended over three days. The opening event was a very even betting race, all the acceptors but Turehaua coming in for strong support on tho machine; At the kennels double the first time Paremata and Turehaua camo down Bodenham then established a good lead' and down ihe back Wellwood, Kaupoko.iui' and Stone Ginger were together chasing him. The leader and Stone Ginger ran off at the double, and Wellwood and Kaupokonut came on togother. Tho latter had most pace on the flat, and won nicely Golden Butterfly was a poor third, and Coalition was well back. Thoughtful was a goo.d'favourite for the i V-?, 5 . Handicap, but Kilkee, Euripos, and Killard were all well, backed. At the start Lion and the favourite ran in front \vith Don Pacifico handy, and Euripos ana' John lieilly next. Two furlongs from homo the,two latter moved up, and Thoughtful retired. Euripos came away at tho distance, and won easily from won, with John HciUy and the favourite following.

Disdainful, who was' making ' her liret appearance at the meeting, and who had. been responsible for several track Tecoras, ■was a hot order in the August Handicap, which she wpn handily. Over the grsi naif of the journey Aerial and Oardrona, led the favourite, but racing on to tne cc-urse proper, the latter took charge. A furlong from homo Zuland was prominent, and the others, that wero prominent retired. Inside the distance Miss de Yal shot out. but though she beat'the others she •had no chance of catching the favourite, who won easily. Charley wae olose up. and then came Black Ada, Tip Up, and Oicnhope. Prom' a time point of view the gallop was tlie best.of the meeting, and it looks ns if tho. connections of the winner, were hasty in scratching her for ■the Winter Cup. Diavolo and Kirkby were withdrawn from the Beaufort Steeples, for which St. Elmn saw a very' short price. The favourite ran a good iace, but at the finish had ' to strike his colours to Sandy Paul, who fenced well throughout. Merry Lad set. . a very fast .pace, and jumped well, but at tho Eocond fence of the kennels double in the last round he lost h\3 rider. Sandy Taul gained a bit on St. ;Elmn at this juncture, and the favourite tiring, was nnablo to overhaul him. Nita was some distance aiway t'iird, and then came The Brewer and.Qlucpot. , Braeburn was very aore, and was pulled up in the last ronnd. The winner was responsible for, carrying Merry Lad into the wing of the fence through running down his fences, and Bt. Elmn, who was close behind, also suf-' fered by the mishap. H. Burt, rider o£ Sferry Lad. had his loo.t badly crushed. .

San Sebistian, Compulsion, and Golden Glado were backed in that order for the Spreydon Hack Hurdles. At the stare Golden Eupee led a strung-out field,' but ■when looking like a winner ho fell at the second fence from home. . JTisS fiation then took charge, and ran in an easy winner from Compulsion, with' San Eebas'tian and Golden Glade following in that order.. ; . ■ ■ . .

Bewi Poto was a solid: favourite in the Sydenham Hurdles, but ho gave a. very disappointing display, and finished out. of a place. The winner turned up in Bon Revo, who was nocrlcoted on the machine. He was ridden by S. Reid, and had a good run on tho fence tho whole way. Dionysius. led him to the last fence, bnt a furlong from home the latter fell and ■broke his leg, and had to be destroyed. Bon Eeve won. easily from Marconi, with Crib well back in third , place. Eewi Poto struck a fence at the baok of the course, and afterwards seemed to .shirk his *.ask. The loss of Dionysius is a. severe one to his owner, as< lie wa/s" one q£ the most promising- hurdle horses in the Dominion. ■Ascalaphus. and Minesweeper were the public selections in the Woolston Handicap, which. resulted in a very fine finish, and a win for Rowanga, who finished very strongly, and lasted long enough, to heat the fasMinishing Minesweeper and Achil]eus. Kimbolton, who made most of the running, was close up fourth. TEe winjier was a greatly improved mare for the race she had on tho opening day.

There was a record investment for tho course in the concluding event, qver £10,000 being recorded. Mr. 0. G. Dalgety's bracketed pair, Snub and Wardancer, were first choice, but they were only a triflo better backed than Lady Penury, Johnny Walker and Hythread, all of whom carried over four figures. .At the start, Orleans went off with a "fly," but wae soon steadied, and Bed Book led at a good pace, with

Snub and Orleans in behind him and the others bunched. At tho three furlongs the leader tired, and Sedd-01-Bahr went out in front. In tho straight Uythread caino fast, and easily disposed of tho loader, and, goiug on.' won easily by a length from Sedd-el-Bahr. Heeltap who- camo fast, was a poor third, and then camo Lady Penury, ridden out. Kiltcßs, Sir Agnes, Orleans, and Johuuy Walker. DETAILS OF THE RACINC.
