THE ALLIES IN THE BALKANS
STATEMENT BY MR. BALFOUR NO IMMEDIATE ACTIVITY EXPECTED (Eec. August 19, 5.5 p.m.) London, August 17. In the House of Commons, Mr. A. J Balfour (Foreign Minister), dealing with the outlook in the Balkans, declared that ho felt confident that the German schemes for expansion through the Balkans and Asia Minor to the Persian Gnlf and beyond would be defeated. The Government was confident that its hopes for tho restoration and glorious future of Serbia would finally and adequately be fulfilled. He trusted there would be military activities in the Balkans, but tho difficulties were very great, and operations comparable to those on the Western front were improbable in the immediate future. Hβ assured House and their Allies that he was giving attention to the question of increasing land transport facilities at Salonika.—ifeuter. COUNT BERNSTORFF GOES TO TURKEY (Kec.
