BRITISH ADVANCE AT LENS
BRILLIANT ASSAULT BY THE CANADIANS ALL OBJECTIVES GAINED RUMANIANS COUNTERATTACKING POPE'S PEACE PROPOSAL CRITICISED
The lull on the British front which was reported yesterday has been the proverbial calm before tho storm. To-day the nows tells of another successful attack of tho British on tho Lons sector. Tho main attack followed a brilliant and successful assault by tho Canadians on tho enemy's strongly-fortified positions at Hill 70. The whole of the front on this Bector then advanced, and a series of important positions were carried, leaving tho Germans in a death-trap if they chooso to stay in tho city. A)l the British objectives were gained at comparatively slight loss, while the enemy's losses aro heavy. - Tho news of the development of a counteroffensive by tho Rumanians looks heartening. Tho enemy's pressure, however, is still very great. The Pope's peaco proposal—whicli, wo aro told to-day, was given premature publicity—has been received with mixed feelings.
