THE RAUMAI TRAGEDY
SENTENCE OF SIX YEARS TOE MANSLAUGHTER. " The trial of George Jackson, farmer, of Rauinai, who was charged with murdering his son, Tom Jackson, oil June 2!) Inst, by stabbing him witli a carving knife, was heard beiora Mr. .Tustico Chapman in the Supreme Court at Palmerston North on Holiday and Tuesday. Mr. Ixmghuan appeared for t!io Crown, and Mr. T. M. Wilford, with Mr. H. G. Moore, for the accused. Unusual interest was manifested in the proceedings, the Court being uncomfortably crowded during tho trial. No evidence was called for the defence, Mr, Wilford addressing the jury on the prisoner's behalf. The jury brought in a verdict of not guilty of muruor, but guilty of manslaughter. His Honour imposed a sentence of six years' imprisonment, witn hard labour. The accused is a wellknown farmor of the Ashhurst district.
