The days or romance are not, vet dead (says the Suva corrcsDondent of the Auckland "Star"). Them recently camc out of the darkness a, boat to Rotumab. II bore three men, and the natives there wero fishing at night when they were hailed, dropped their (laroe iu the water, and made hastily for the mainland. The men in the boat, wero Captain Frarer. W. S. Mycr. and Charles Sherman. Seventy days before they had set sail from San Pedro, the. port, of Los Angeles, in a catboat of 12, tons burden, to find an island in tho Pacific, a thousand miles away, where they had been told pearlers, after extracting the pearl, bad left great heaps of pearl shell, since rendered valuable by the. increased demand. The adventurers bad hoped to return to America, in two months. Instead, they found themselves ofl an unknown reef in a leaky boat, each of them worn out with taking turns at tho pump. For days they had been living on beans, macaroni, and split peas, after a voyage during which they struck perpetual rough weather and never sighted another sail.- They decided to abandon tho boat, ajid launched the. small rowing boat. They managed to find an opening in tho reef and landed in safety. They arc now in Suva, and will proceed to Pago Pago whence they hope to continue their voyage back to America. MESS-TABLE GOSSIP. At a mcctinK of the Victorian Marine Board on July 27 an application for examination for a mate's certificate was received from It. E. Keyes, a returned soldier, and formerly engaged on vcsselß trading between Australia and Ocean Island and other ports. The applicant stated that in 1912, when an apprentice ou an oversea ship, ho ' la( ' deserted at Melbourne. Subsequently he had been cmployed nn other vessels for a period of ten months and a half. Towards the close
of 1914 he had enlisted, and had served with the Australian Forces at the front. An apprentice, deserting his fhip is liable for two years' additional service, hut in the case in question the Mar ne Board, taking into coiftidorn tion the fact that, the applicants conduct while serving on Inn steamers mentioned, and later afl a soldier at tho war, had bejn very satisfactory, decided to ajlow him to sit for thn examination. When this decision was reached Captain J. Little intimated that if Mr. Keyes was successful at his examination, Captain Little's firm (Howard bmitn, Ltd.) would find, hin; employment,, in view of tho fact that the man was a returned soldier. TJio hcow Hazel Ronton, which has been undergoing overhaul at Lyttelton, came off tho slip on Monday. It is understood she will proceed shortly to the West Coast, where she will enter the timber trade.
