SHIPPING SHORTAGE
MAKE TEE BEST Oil 1 THE AVINTER. An interesting question relating to tho shipping shortage was asked .in tho House of Representatives bv Mr. Poole. Ho asked tho Prime Minister: "Whether, in view .of the reported possiblo cessation or restriction of submarine activity in the winter'months, ho will at onco communicate with tho Imperial authorities requesting a full supply of cargo 'steamers to rush Home tho primaiy products of this country for' tho- British winter months when the maximum amount, of safely is available?" Mr. Poole .lidded, by way of explanation, tho following note:—"The;-European winter affords sixteen hours of darkness for night and an average low visibility by day. such conditions being favourable to ships with supplies for tho new spring operations."
Mr. Masscy replied:—"Tho- Government is in constant touch with tho .Imperial authorities, and have last no onportunify of making representations vi'h the object of supplying sufficient steamers to cope with tho commodities of the Dominion awaiting shipment."
