HUTT COUNTY COUNCIL
Hr,/J. Wakeham presided at the meeting of the Hutt County Council held yesterday, and others present were Conn, cillors Galloway, Edwards, 'Whiteman, Welch, and Howell. A motion of sympathy for Sir Francis Bell in the loss of his' son in action was passed. The Defence Department wrote granting ~£3OO ■ for tho maintenance of the road between Trentham Camp and Taita. It was reported that the 6torin of July 29 had caused a Rood deal of damage in the Horokiwi Valiey. Some bridges had become undermined, and the necessary repairs had been put in hand. Two eases of scarlet fever and two of diphtheria were reported for the montlu Recently some complaints were made that certain posts oil culverts on, the Rimutaka' Hill Road constituted a danger to traffic. In his report to the council the inspector of works (Jfr. J. W. Cudby) denied this, claiming that they' are more of a protection than a menace. Neither did ho hold with the suggestion that lengthening some of the culverts would add to the safety of the road.
