OBITUARY

'KEV. FATHER KEOGfi, S.M. Tho death occurred at tlie Greenmeadovvs Seminary on Monday night of the Kev. Father Augustine ICeogli, S.M., 8.A., who had suffered a long and painful illness. Tlio late Father Keogh was very well known and popular in ■Wellington, having come out from Ireland ag principal of St. Patrick's College in. succession to the late Kev. Dr. Watters. He was a native of Dublin, where ho was born in 1653. Leaving Ireland in 1901, he came direct to Wellington, and remained the head of tho College until 1909. Ho had previously been rector of St. Mary's College, Dundalk, and as an educationist ho made a distinct, interesting, and impressive mark on the training of the Catholic youth of New Zealand. Ho brought to the exercise of hi 3 responsible office a dignity and efficiency of control that ensured not only the respect, but the love, of students. In tho days when the cadet system was in full swing the late Father Keogh was one of its most earnest advocates, and the cadets of "St. Pat's." had no reason to complain of tho position they held in the embryo military world. In 1909 he succeeded Dean Smyth in tho charge of tho Hastings parish, and administered there until ,1915, when he again joined the staff of St. Patrick's College. In Hastings ho did valuablo work, and his name is still revered. He left the college again at the end of last year, and he had sinco been at the Greenmeadows Seminary. For some years past Father Keogh's health had been failing. He will be remembered by many an ."old boy" of the college as a stern disciplinarian, a most capablo teacher, a kindly guide, and a gentleman of distinction. .Tie was regarded as an authority in astronomy, in -which science he took a keen interest. The flag at tho college was flying at half-mast yesterday. Tho funeral will take place at Hast ; ngs to-morrow.
