INDECENT ASSAULT CASES
JURY RECOMMENDS FLOGGING. By Telegraph—Press Association. Christchurch, August G. • " At tho Supreme Court the Grand Jury \ mode the following presentment to Mr. Justice Denniston"The Grand Jury "again draw attention to tho shocking number of indecent assault cases on young children,, and urge those in authority-to so amend the law that persons convicted of such offences should be severely flogged." His Honour asked the foreman if tho jury intended tho presentment to mean that in every caso of indecent assault on young children tho sentence must include a severe flogging. Tho foreman: Certainly. His Honour said ho would forward the presentment to the proper quarter, but felt bound to add that, as a result of long experience he was satisfied that owing to tho extreme variance in culpability in cases of this class, such a rule would do more to decreaso the probability of conviction than otherwise.
