RUGBY FOOTBALL
BATOIIDAY'S -MATCHES. There was si fair attendance, at Atlf* ictio Park on Saturday afternoon to witness the Rugby matches played there. The weather was fine, but dull, and the ground was in bad order. It wub heavy .' and irrcasy at tho commencement of the eahieß and the : players soon worked it into a most unsatisfactory stato for football. Nevertheless the clay was interesting, and of;.a fairly high standard. The heavy nature of tho ground was against faßt play, but the light teams endured the conditions well-and thero wore at times flashes of excellent football.
ST. PATRICK'S BEAT ATHLETIC. Tho gamo between St. Patrick's' College and Athletic resulted in a win for the (lollege fifteen by tho narrow margin of three points to nil.. The teams, were fairly evenly matched and the contest was fought out very keenly..The heavy ground told against both teams and many promising movements were defeated as much by the adverse conditions as by tho opposing team. In addition to the state of the ground, the greasy ball was difficult to handle. There was only one score durinn the match and that went to Bt. Patriok's in the form of a try by Galpin. Minchau took the kick at. goal and failed in his attempt to add tho extra points. The game, therefore, ended with the score standing: St. Patrick's, 3 points; Athletic, 0. OLD BOYS DEFEAT WELLINGTON COLLEGE. Tho match on the other ground was that between Wellington College and Old Boys. In this fixture there wajj a good deal more scoring than in the game in ""progress alongside of it, and the teams were not quite so x even. However, the win whicli Old Boys seotired was no runaway victory and tho boys in the black jerseys put up a very creditable fight, and there was no certaintly until well on in the gamo that Old Boys would win. As it was thero was not much between the teams at the finish. Old Boys winning only by 9 points to 6 points. For tho winning team tries wore obtained by Renal, Oarr, and Touks. Marris was entrusted with most of the goal-kicking for the team, but he failed to Bcoro oft his efforts. Wellington College's six points were all obtained by Davidson, who crossed the line twice and scored two good tries.
