A cable message received from the War Office reported that Second-Lieutenant Trevor White, K.F.C., of Wellington, has been missing since July 27, but a later cablegram stated t,hat Lieutenant White is belioved to bo a prisoner of war in Germany. Lieutenant White enlisted on August 8, 19U, with the New Zealand Forces. Ho went to Samoa with the first bafch, and on returning left with the JTltli Reinforcements, serving atGallipoli and on tho Continent until last February, when he received his commission in the Royal'l'lying Corps, and proceeded to England,

Mr. Frank Meadowcroft, president of tlfe Kelburn Bowling Club, has been entertained by.the members previous to his departure on a business trip to England. He intends only being a fortnight in the u?d Country.

An old colonist of Auckland, Mr. John Garland, died recently at Patmnahoe, aged 73. Mr. Garland camo to Auckland in the ship African in 1860., He was a chemist by profession, but, with other members of his family, took tip land at Awhitu. During 1862-B-t he saw active sorvico in tho Maori War, and later spent some years on the goldfields at the West Coast and Thames. Ho leaves seven sons, four daughters, and thirtyfour grand-children. His brothers are: Mr. Edward Garland, of Ponsonby, and Mr. G. .1. Garland, of Auckland, and his youngest sister, Mis. .1. A. Adams, resides at Northcotc.

Mr. Prank Rood, Chief Inspector of Mines, has received a cablogram that bis son, Lieutenant Porcy Hourtley-Eeed, 12th Battnlion Australian Infantry, has received tbo Military Cross for conspicuous bravery at the battle of liallecourt during the recent advance in France. Lieutenant Reed joined tbo Australian Army asa private at tho beginning of tho war, and has seen active service at German Now Guinea, Arabia, and has taken part in every battle in France in which tho Australians have been engaged, being wounded at Poziercs, Ypres, and Bullecourt. He is a native of Westport. Commander A. Hourtley-Reed, R.N., brother to Mr. Frank Heed, who was recently in command of H.M.S. Dundee, bas been appointed to command one of the new battleships constructed to destroy U-boats. Another brother of Mr. Kecd's, viz., Private W. HeurtleyReed is with flio Nineteenth' New Zealand Reinforcements on active service.

Corporal Peter Meek, whose death occurred, in Franco on July 19, wns a son of the lato Mr. John Meek, of Dunedin, and was born in that'city 47 years ago. Ho was a builder, and for many years was in tbo .Public Works Department in Wellington and elsowhore. He saw scrvico in South Africa during tbo Boer War, first as a private in Now Zealand's Fifth Contingent, and later as a sergeant in the Ninth Contingent. Nearly two years ago ho again responded" to the call of Empire, and went away as a member of the Eighth Reinforcements, which wero stationed in Egypt beforo going to Europe. One of his brothers is returning invalided and another is on the medical staff nt Brockenlvc'st, and a nephew, wlio left with tho Seventh Reinforcements, is now on the front. The late- Corporal Meok has loft a widow, now living m Webb Street.
