THE RECRUITING OFFICE

Sir,—Migiit I, as a mere woman, write and protest against tho dirty, disgraceful and ramshackle officee appointed for out Defenco Department in connection with the Recruiting Department. I had occasion to go.£itere and I can honestly say I Sfdn't fancy going up those stairs. I really thought I was finding my way to tho seed stores, etc., of some vrarehonse. Another thing—Unless one knew where to go the offices would be very hard to find as tho only notice to.that effect is a piece of dirty pencilled paper stuck half-way up tho stairs. Surely swell a. thing wouldn't be ■ tolerated at Home. There the War Office commandeered all such buildings as it thought fit and required. Here we find officers aud gentlemen stuck away in dirty, bauTy ventilated and lighted rooms. The excuse—on active service—can hardly be made here. And surely those men who aro doing their bit ought to be considered a little moro tin a land where there is so much). Good buildings and canteens of all sorts are being erected for tho men, and quite right, too; but at tho same time these men who have to spend iiil tho week at omee hours should be considered too, and tho offices of the Director of Recruiting, etc., are a disgrace not only to Wellington and the Government, but to ,tao Defence Headquarters. —C am, etc., ONE WHO WOULD LIKE TO CLEAN UP.
