DR. ADDISON'S APPOINTMENT CRITICISED.
(Rec. August 3, 11.25 p.m.) London, August 3. The House of Commons has debated the appointment of a Minister for Eeconstruction (Dr. Addison). Mr. Hcwine moved an amendment which eought to prevent the Minister from advising on commercial, industrial, and agricultural policy, but this was negatived by 89 votes to 64. Sir George Cave (Home Secretary), explained that the Government was solely responsible for matters of policy. The Minister's duty was to make early and valuable recommendations. His salary would be at the rate of X2OOO a year. The appointment was approved by 142 votes to 40.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Aesn.
