THAMES GOLDFIELD
JUBILEE CELEBRATION. By Tclegraph-P"" •—'-'•— i hamcs, August 1. There was a largo gathering at Thames to-day for the celebiation of tho jubilee of the opening of the goldfield in August, 1867. There are many visitors present from Auckland and elsewhere. The function included a procession through the nrincinal streets, • a civic reception to tho pioneers,,and addresses by the Mayor and County Chairman and M.P. for the district. Later a luncheon was given to the pioneers, the Mayor presiding. The toasts included: The King," nroposed bv tho chairman; Our Guests,"' proposed by Mr. W. M Cullough, the oldest living ex-Mayor ot the Thames, and responded to by Mr. "• lilomneld, Auckland. . . At a commemorative service m IM afternoon-tho principal speaker was the Rev. W. J. Williams, of Clinstchurcli, the only living Thames pioneer minister. Father Diernan also spoke, and other ministers took part in the procMflmgs.
Anthems were siing by a united choir. The celebration closes this evening with a concert. „,„,,• <. „ A number of residents of Wellington who formerly lived at the Thames have sent a telegram as follows to he JubileeCommittee:—"The large number of old Thamesites now in Wellington, having warm reeallectioiis of years-spent on tlio lield, send hearty greetings to their friend* now celebrating the jubilee, anil wish the district a long lease of .prosperity, commercially and industrially, with an early revival of the mining glories of the '70's."
