1 — LETTISH FROM GENERAL BIRDWOOD. Sir James Allen ha? just received a letter from General Rirdwood. of thd first Anziic Corps, which contains references to recent events at the front. "You will have seen from the papers." ho writes, "that wr have, been havjns? a great deal of hard fighting, and I am proud to think that my men have been doing, if possible, letter than they have done before. You will understand what it meant to fight their way into the Hindenburg line and to hold on there unsupported against attacks from the front and l>oth flanks. I always think that this requires far greater courage and steadfastness than are necessary for an actual attack, which is carried through by elan, Hionirh this the troops displayed in their ( iijinat attack on. the line. "From what we can gather from prisoners, Germany eeems to be relying entirely upon the success of her submarine campaign. Every man tells us he has been assured that if they will only hold out for the next two or three months wo must be 6tarved into submission."
