Years of patient endeavour by the Victorian farmer have resulted in the production of a sort of super-onion, which is making the'name of the. State famous abroad (says the Melbourne "Age"). A feature of a. debate on supply in the Victorian Legislative Assembly was praise showered on the Victorian' onion. Mr. Elmslie informed the House that in America there was a- great demand for these onions at £70 per ton. ■A. trader, had fold him that he would take hundreds of loads of Australian onions if lie could pet them, and he was coming to Australia to see if he could secure supplies. The Department of Agriculture, " Mr. Elmslie urged, should endeavour to develop this trade, and it would he necessary to eliminate the "multitude of middlemen." as growers received .£3 tcr £b per ton for onions when thev brought .£7O per ton in America. The" Minister of Lands stated that A'ictorian onions liad made a reputation throughout, the world, and he explained that tho outbreak of war had interfered with a scheme to send direct shipments of onions and apples to America without; transhipment at. Sydney. Mr. Bailey added expert, testimony to the value of,the Victorian Spanish onion, which, lie said, had been raised to its state of perfection by a, lone; course of cultivation.
