CONTROL OF FOOD SUPPLIES
STATEMENT BY LORD RHONDDA PREVENTING SPECULATION (Rec. July 27, 9.30 p.m.) London, July 26. In the House of Lords, Lord Khonddn, Food Controller, stated that tlio Board of Trade estimated that the cost ,of food had been doubled to the wage-earner, and tho cost of living had increased 75 per cent. We would not be cut of danger until the result of tho jUlies' shipbuilding was felt. His policy was to fix the prices of necessaries, the supplies of which he could effectively control from tho producer to the retailer. Prices vpukl bo fixed on the basis of pre-war profits. Re was making efforts to prevent speculation and to eliminate unnecessary middlemen. He would jprees for imprisonment in bad cases of illegal profits. The policy of subsidising the loaf was only justified by the present circumstances. He could not i-entrcjl the price abroad. He hoped America would be able to , effectively control' her supplies. The local authorities will appoint food control committees, including at least one Labourite and one woman, and communal kitchens will be established— Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
