NATIVE LAND DEAL
,'A. WAIRARAPA CASE. ■ A question was asked in the House of Kopresentatives yesterday regarding a. certain transaction in Native.land which, was the subject of some comment in the ' "Wairarapa district two years ago. At that time Mr. Hornsby asked the Minister of Native-Affairs whether lie'would Bet up .eg commission of inquiry to investigate the part that two men—W. B. ' Chennells, an agent, and Beard, .a solici- . tor—had taken in the affair. Mr. Horns- '■'". Dy asked the. Minister again yesterday •'.-. whether ho would set up a commission.' '. Mr., Hemes said that it was true that .'; the Government' had intended to set up the commission, but since then legal proceedings had been taken on behalf of Khe-Native aggrieved,, which had Usted a considerable. timc.;'He believed these .proceedings had now' terminated very Satisfactorily for; the: Native.', He (Mr. Merries), understood also that)} the Law . Society -had taken up .the case of the solicitor, Mr. Beard, and that proceedings in the Supreme 1 Court' would follow. - iTJntil those proceedings w«re finished, it would obviously be wrong to set up a commission to inquire into matters which', would be sub judice. As soon as the. proceedings were finished he would be Klad to make inquiries as to whether the commission was necessary.
