Yyith 9st, 71b. the All lied gelding is not badly treated, and ho can get tho distance well. Those who saw what he had to nut tin with "iu his winnine effort at Trentham are confident he will run a good race at lliccifrton. Word from Invcrcareill states that the parents of the well-known Southland horseman, M. Pankhurst, have received news of the death of their son from wounds received in France. Though South Island stables are always well represented in the Winter Gnu, they have only been successful •on five occasions during 18 years. This jcur .again moat of the greatest fancied candidates hail from the North Island. At Elleralio Te Onga. Fisher, and Gluepot are being kept going in view of Grand National engagements. All are .in good heart, and are expected to take their departure next week. The brood mare ltone has a fine foal at foot by Autummis, and is in foal toTreadmill. She visits the last-named sire again iext season. The new owner of Sarto is Mr. B. IT. Roberts, of Greymouth. Though Mr. Roberts resides on riie West Coast, he spends a lot of his time at Aahmirst, where he has several brood mares located on his farm there. "* • Word from the south states that tho Riccurton tracks now oner exceptionally fine-'going, due to the good weather that has been experienced there latelv. The tracks at most places in tho North Island are quite the reverse to what is reported of Kiccarton. Mr. S. W. Tathaiu, of Woortville, recently disposed of his yearling by Demosthenes, from Jeanne D'Arc, to a outran of F. Watson's Feildine stables. Miss de Val never looked bettor than she does at the present time, and the brown mare has an army of supporters for tho Winter Cun. in which she will be ridden by S. Eeid. Since the Wellington Meeting J. Ayers has not allowed her to eat the, oats of idleness, and she appears to thrive on the work she is getting. Of the youngsters in work at Trentham nothing is more forward'than the Rolteby —"Rose Red colt owned by Mr. Lance Wood. Several times this youngster'has been galloped over three furlongs, and he should be well ready to nlay his part at the early spring meetings.
