"SECTARIAN BITTERNESS"

A BISHOP AND HIS WRITINGS. A certain article in: a recent issue of tho "New Zealand Tablet," the official organ of the Catholic Church, was the'subject of a question in the House of Representatives by Mr. Wi Nosworthy. Mr. Nosworthy asked tho Vrinie Minister: Whether his attention nas been drawn to certain words used in an nrticlo ' 'published in the "New Zealand Tablet" (the official orgnn of the Roman Catholic . Church) on Thursday, July 5, 1917, over the signature of "Edward Thomas, Bishop' of Limerick"; and whether the Government will take steps to prosecute the above-mentioned journal for sedition, tlio words being as follow: "The evil work of statesmen and newspaper writers has produced a coarse, black, brutal hatred of Germany and Germans that makes tho war more like the deadly struggle of wild beasts than a combat amongst ". men. That temper is now tho great obstacle to peace. In the present frame of mind of the English people, and, I am sorry to say, of many Irish, ro abuse, no insult, no falsehood, is considered too gross to hurl at tho German. Wc hear no admission that there is anything In bo said for them—that they are of tho same nature as ourselves; that in their immenso industries anj growing commerce they havo given pledges to tho peace of the world; that possibly thero may bo some truth in their claim that they are lighting a war of self-defence; that for forty-four years, from 1870-1911. they had ;iever done any act of aggression against any country, a claim which neither England, nor France, nor Russia-can claim for itself"? The Prime Minister 'replied: Such paragraphs as are referred to ore illmlvised, and lend to encourage sectarian bitterness. They are therefore to be deprecated, especially at a time like this, when all sections of iho community should endeavour to present a united front to the common enemy. Tt is to bo remembered, though, that the paragraph has been nuotcd with approval by only one individual (the editor of the publication above quoted). I n»i confident there ©™ not many who will agree with him. *fflp qnestfon as to whether this constitutes a seditions utteraneo will be referred to the law officers of (he Crown.
