The second half of this tourney should provide some very interesting play. i As a result of the first month's play in theWorkinsmen'sClnj) annual Handicap Chess Tourney Messrs. Barnes and Eton are unbeaten, while Messrs. Douglas, T.nvkinjr, and Greig, each with only one loss, are in close pursuit. Messrs. Faulknor, TToiuiosscy. Wild and Anion have also made good scores. The best (allies to date in the club's annual Draughts Tourney aro as follow:—Bricksou, 171 wins 1 loss; M'.Pherson, 113 —21; Connor! 27—3; Malison, 13—5; Costello, 8-1; Larking, 131-Gi: Colville. 11.-H; Burgess. 10—10. The 'Wellington Club's "Petherick" tournament was commenced last week with seventeen competitors I his being tho largest entry that j the club has had for many years past. There is also a very- encouraging iuciense in the number of ladder matches, and abo a marked improvement in the attendances on club nights, several new members having joined this year. The club's prospects arp consequently much brighter than' they have been at any time during tlio past ton years. Tim final results or the Canterbury v. Wellington and Wanganui v. Masterton matches should 1» available at an early date. Tho Alaslertoii Club recently acquired three new members, but they are about to lose Paul Kunimer, who goes into camp on Wednesday. Ho is a strong; player and a generous supporter of the game, and will be greatly missed in Wairarapa cheos circles.
