QUENTIN GERMANS GAIN TEMPORARY SUCCESS ENEMY'S ATTACK AT AVOCOURT REPULSED The High Commissioner reports:— ' London, July 19 3.30 p m A French official report states: "South of St. Quentin yesterday at 7 p.m., after a violent bombardment, the Germans attacked the crest of Moulia-de-Tousvents. They gained a footing in the first-line trench, but were ejeoted from the greater part by our counter-attack. At Avocourt Wood the Germans counter-attacked our new positions, but were checked before reaching our lines." ■" FURTHER VIOLENT ATTACKS REPULSED The High Commissioner reports:— ~_,,.„., London, July 20, 2 am A Ironch official report states: "Southwards of St. Quentin the enemy's attack on Tamelon and Mouli-sous-Touvent completely failed. "After an extremely violent bombardment the Germans attacked from the north-east of Graonne to eastwards of Hurtebtse. The enemy was forced to call up the Kith Division of Guards, which they used at several points in thick waves. The attack - " completely failed on two wings, bint 111 the centre the enemy reached the elements of our first line trench, and were then stopped, after sustaining the lieaviest of losses." July 20, 8.50 p.m.) A French official report states: "Iteciprocal artillery firing prevails the whole front, being particularly violent between the Souime and the Aisne. On the left bank of the Jleuse, after a violent bombardment, the Germans attacked us south of St. Quentin on a front of 800 yards east of Gauchy and obtained a footing in our first line. Our counter-attack moved the enemy out from the greater part. After a most intense bombardment the enemy last even, ing counter-attacked on our new positions at Avocourt Wood. The High Commissioner reports: London, July 19, 1.45 p.m. Sir-Douglas Haig reports: "At Monchy-le-Preui (Arras sector) we have reestablished the advanced posts from wbioh we were compelled to fall back by' the enemy attack on July 11." ' . RAIDING ATTACKS IN FLANDERS. London, July 19., Sir Douglas Haig reports: "We repulsed raiders west of Cherisy and east of Oosttaverne successfully. Sir Douglas Haig reports: "Under covor of a heavy bombardment, to which we replied vigorously, the enemy re-attacked southward of Lombaertzyde, but reaohod our lino only on a small portion of tho front. Ouir counter-attacks immediately drove out those who were entering the trenches. The enemy's raids last night westward of Cherisy were pressed with great determination, and strongly supported by artillery. A German official report states: "Our concentrated massed artillery fire in Flanders frustrated English reconnaissances in the coastal region and eastward of Ypres. We stormed the French hoights south-west of St. Quentin on a kilometro (three-fifths of a mile), capturing many prisoners and defeating counter-at-tacks.
