« TO BE OBTAINED FOB THE HOSPITAL. The following extract and recommendation from tlie Medical Superintendent's report, presented at yesterday's meeting of the Wellington Hospital and Charitable Aid Board, ,was approved by tho board as a whole yesterday afternoon: — "After careful .consideration, I think that in order to do good work in the X-ray department it will be necessary to secure tho serviced of a qualified medical practitioner, who ivill devote all his time to this work. I wo-uld suggest that some young graduate, possibly one handicapped by some physical disability, be engaged, if necessary .sent for six months to work .in one of the X-ray laboratories in Australia, and tl'en employed at a salary of or JESOA a year; rising .£SO per year to n- maximum of .£800; to have lunch at the xlospital,. but otherwise to live out; to woiV five .and a half nays a week, hours D to'A to .be in ?ole charge of the X-ray and medical treatment department, witli a nNjchaiKic. and for j.art of the time a nurse, wonting uJKier his supervision/' v . . ~ It was thought tft.it a njsui should rot be 60nt to obtain X.-ray instruction in Australia unless they* had some hold en the person's services when he retnr.wri. Dr. Barclay thought iii would be possible to get a mail who wouVd be prepared to enter into a bond with tlie board. On the motion of th»' chairman, Dr. Barclay is to report at tl'.c next meeting of the board as to whether* he ca7i a man to proceed to Australia for the purpose mentioned. COUNTRY MEMBERS J.N" CONFERENCE : THEIR VIEWS ON TAXATION. The country members have beeft liolcjing meetings during the past few days for the purpose of arriving ;it an understanding among themselves in order V:hat they might be in a position to act a? a body in impressing their views regarding taxation upon the Government., They were desirous of making their requests known before the Cabinet had formalized its financial policy. They felt that -when once the Government had aimotinceU its taxation proposals it would be an extremely difficult matter to secure altprations or modifications. The excess ])? cr/its tax came in' for much adverse criticisui. The general opinion was that it pressed very severely on small farmers. Iho forms they had to fill in were much too complicated, and many had paid njorethan was required from them owing to ' mistakes in filling in the papers. Tae country members did not succeed in, reaching an agreement on all points, and came to-tho conclusion that it voultl not be advisable to formulate any specuc suggestions for the suidfince of the Government, but that members should havo a general talk with Ministers regarding matters specially affecting the country districts. It was, however, discovered that the Government had already come to a decision regarding the main features of its taxing proposals, and the desired conference with Ministers had to be abandoned. But the views of the country members have been indirectly arid informally made known lo tlie Government, and it is now generally understood that the excess profits tax will be either repealed or modified in a very radical manner. It is stated that the Government has come to the conclusion that„ in its present form, it does not hit the right people, and does not bring in the amount hoped for.
