FRUIT CANNING
THE DUTY ON -MACHINERY. Appeals wero mado by the . Nelson members, Mr. T. A. ff. Field and 11 r. K. V. Hudson, .in tho House of Itopresoutatives yesterday fe-r tlis remission of the duty on fruit canning machinery. At present dairy factory machinery and appliances'are admitted freo of duty, hut dirty is levied iipon fruit canuinjr machinery. The fruit industry is now in a somewhat precarious position. It is no longer possible to export a finale caso of fresh fruit. It would bo possible to export fruit canned or evaporated, and the fruitfrrowers aro anxious to establish factories; and put in machinery. It happens that this year the yield lias beon tmiall, and there lias been no Kimplus for export. Next year tho growers expect a good yield, and unless factories for dealing with, tho fruit are establisehd much fruit will be lost, because the local market will not absorb all of it.
