EXPORT OF WHITE PINE TIMBER
Members representing dairying districts - are'interesting- themselves this session iu impressing upon tbo Government the urgency, of the need for the preservation of white pine timber. All of them ask that the (rovemmont should prohibit the . export of this timber, in view of tlie need for consorving it for tho making of boxes .ior dairy produce. In the House of Ke- , presentatives yesterday, Mr..Pearcepointed out tho' Government at-present'was actually encouraging .the export' of this timber by charging'a less freight on timber railed'to a port for shipment than on timber going from .a mill to a dairy •factory.' Cine danger of prohibiting ox- ' port was pointed out by Mr. Vernon Reed. It is a fact that whito pine tim- . ber grows only on the best land, and for , this reason a great'deal of white pine 'forest has been destroyed to clear the " land for farming dperations. Much more 'of it has'been destroyed in this way than has been iised for milling. Mr. Roed'a fear is that if export is prohibited tie value of the timber will-be reduced, and it will no longer be profitable for owners of standing white pine forest to bold it. They would probably decide to' foil the •fcreos to clear tho land. In this way it was probable that more timber would b6 lost than would be lost by exporting small quantities, of it to' Australia- The matter has been under investigation by 'tie Board of Trade, but the Government '"has not yet considered the board's re-, ■- -port. ' Woods' Great Peppermint Curs. Tor Coughs and Colds, never fails.'
