The Chamber has approved of the suspension of the Constitutional guarantees (already' reported) iii Lisbon and the neighbouring villages, and has also expressed confidence in the Government's measures to suppress 'the workmen's revolt. Cable ,Assn. SUGAR SUPPLIES IN BRITAIN STATEMENTS IN THE HOUSE OF ■ COMMONS. London, July 17. During the Committee stage of the Finance Bill, the Right Hon. T. Lough moved a reduction of the duty on sugar to a halfpenny per pound. There was, he said, considerable discontent because, although tho supply of sugar available in 1916 was only 18 per cent, less than in 1913, only 50 per cent, of it reached the consumer. Mr. Bonar Law said the Government had found it necessary to take over.the control of sugar, and thus maintain uniformity of price longer than was otherwise possible. The difficulty was not in getting supplies but in obtaining tvansTlio motion was negatived.—Aus.-N.Z. Cablo Assn.
