AN URGENT APPEAL TO SHIPYARDS
THE NAVY'S NEED TWO WEAPONS ESSENTIAL (Eeo. July 18, 6 p.m.) London, July 17. The Iron and Steel Trades Confederal Hon received a message, signed by Sir Edward Carson and Sir John Jellicoe (Heads of tho Admiralty), impressing upon the meeting the seriousness of the position arising from the operations of the enemy's submarines. 'Our determined enemy," states the message, "has set himself ,to blockade Britain and destroy merchantmen which are bringing food to the people and supplies to the Army. We need all our resources to prevent this starvation which threatens us. The enemy knows this, . and has staked everything upon it. If be succeeds the victory wilt rest with him. If ho fails hia defeat is certain. The only two weapona we can use are both forged in fne shipyards—the one is the class cf warship which enables the Navy to hunt and destroy submarines; tho other is replacing ..of sunken merchantmen. These woapomf must bo nsed together. Upon the men in tho shipyards and in the engineering shops depends the output. We appeal to you to.spare no effort to pro. duce those weapons to win the war.''— Keuter.
