BALLOT APPEALS

YESTERDAY'S LIST

BEFORE THE WELLINGTON BOARD Tho Third Military Service Board dealt with a fresh list of appeals yesterday. Mr. H. J. Jjeswick presided, "and with nun were Messrs M. J. Mack ahd A. U'L. Considine. Captain P. Baldwin is tho military representative. Picderick. Rogers, compositor, cf Lower Hutt, said that he had seen 2irl days' service with tho forces at Samoa, and hud been discharged. When ho produced his discharge, the chairman remarked mat appellant must still be a reservist, as tho ground of the discharge was not medical unfitness. Appellant replied that ho had been esked by the officer who gave .tile dischargo whether he would have a "medically unfit" discharge, and ho had chosen not to. The chairman advised appellant to see the medical officer in question, and have the matter set in order. Tho case was adjourned sine die.

Hnrold John Hall, storekeeper, Kaiwarru, asked for an extension of time. ■The case was adjourned for a fortnight to givo appellant an opportunity of disposing of his business. The case of W. L. Eanthain, Salvation Army officer; of Epsom, Auckland, was adjourned sine die, and will lie reviewed before the calling up of the Second Division. Charles J. Thornton stated that he and his three brothers had a confectionery business in Mauuers Street. The brothers were either in camp or waiting to be called up, and if appellant were sent into camp the business, which employed 28 bauds, would have to close down. The chairman said that it was Midoubtedly a case of hardship, but, unfortunately for tho appellant, tho industry in which lie was engaged was perhaps the least essential. The appeal was adjourned sine die, and the understanding that the decision would be reviewed before 'the Second Hivisiou reservists were called up.

Ronald Archibald Buchanan, farmer, of Waikanae, satisfied the board that he •was over military age. . His appeal was therefore allowed. v

Frederick Roberts, temporary lighthouse keeper at Somes Island,_ also claimed to be over age. The chairman said he did not doubt appellant's statement, but he would adjourn the case for formal proof. ' ■ The appeal of Thcophane Eusebias Sellers, dentist's assistant, was allowed, on the ground.that appellant was not yet twenty years of age. Henry Mitchell, for domestic itasons, was granted leave till August 22. He said he was supporting a widowed mother. . . A joint appeal was made by Stacey Woollett, mutton grader, Petone, and his employer. The board dismissed the ap-. peal. Henry Alexander Schlonbach, carpenter, of'Rintoul Street, said he had conscientious objection's to combatant work. He was not a member of any religious sect, and understood that ho had no grounds of appeal under the Act. He would have had no opportunity, however, of saying anything if he had not appealed. He had no objection to serving with the Ambulance. The board agreed to recommend that appellant be diafted to the N.Z.M.C. It was stated that Schlonbaqh's father was a native of Piussia, and his mother a native of Switzerland. The father was at present living in Dunedin. Daniel M'Grath appealed on the ground of undue hardship. His appeal was dismissed, and he was granted leave till July 2G. ■ \ ■ Charles Duncan Sutton, dairy farmer, 'IV Horo, ,said that he could produce a recommendation regarding his ccse from the Efficiency Trustees in his district. The chairman informed appellant that he must submit the document to the Efficiency Board, .ami see whether it would make -a recommendation. In tho afternoon, appellant handed ever a communication from the Efficiency Buord. The board adjourned the case to the first sitting in September. Mr. Considinc observed that the Efficiency Board ought to try to make some provision lor the carrying on of small farms vhile their owners wore away. So far nothing had been done in this direction. Thomas Mason claimed to be a returned soldier discharged as medically unfit after 95 days of active service. The board allowed his appeal. George Edgar Martin, head accountant in the 'Wellington warehouse of Messrs. J. Butler, Ltd., alleged undue lurdship as the ground of his appeal for extension of time. The case was adjourned pending the submission of a report by the Financial Assistance Board. Tho board intimated that in. any case cppellant would not bo granted leave bryond August 22.
