The matter of the justice of the penal Storage charges that are being made by the Wellington Harbour Board on goods that "are not lifted within twenty-four lours of their arrival in' store was the subject of consideration , by the council of the Wellington Chamber of Commerce yesterday. These charges were made irrespective' of the fact that the documents may not have arrived and before' it was possible to givira letter'of'indemnity or make arrangements with the Customs. The chief complainant,' who produced a good deal of correspondence on the subl- - quoting specific instances, was of opinion, that twenty-four hours was not a long enough period to allow prior to tho penal charge "being imposed, and suggested that the term should be four days.- ■ • ' ■ .
The'council did not go all the way with tho complainant, but thought that the board was ' cutting; the timo allow-: ance very fine. It was resolved to approach the 'board with the suggestion that'forty-eight hours should be the period before the penal charge (2s. per ton per day over and abovo ■ ordinary storage charges) was'imposed.
