CATHOLIC KNITTING GUILD
■ MUST ANNUAL MEETING. Tho first iinmul meeting- of the Catholic Knitting Club was held in St. Patrick's Hall yesterday afternoon. There was a'very good attendance of members and Father Hurley presided. Thcannual report was as follows: "This guild was inaugurated on June Jl, 1016. Tho following officers were elected:—President. Miss Kennedy; lion, treasurer, Mrs. J. .1 Burke; lion, secretary, Miss Wheeler; executive committee, Mesdames Corrigan, Mackin, J. .1. M'Ctrath, J. E. Gamble, and Miss M. Collins.' The city was-divided.into districts, euch district being supervised and worked by a lady specially appointed, and under the control of tho Guild's executive. The work was taken up in a most enthusiastic manner, and although a number of members have fallen.out, many faithful and ardent workers remain, tho result shown proving how much may be accomplished by even a few. "At the inaugural meeting nearly JCflO was donated, and a. fair number of donations have since been received. Of social functions held, wo would specially mention Sister Liguori's concert, from which wo received 18s., and an 'at homo' held in the Concert Chamber for tho drawing! of tho raffles on tho Carrickmacross lace, kindly donated by Mrs. Martin Kennedy, and an afternoon teaclotli, given by Miss Margaret Collins,"" which ■augmented bur funds by <«, net profit of JI3S lis. / "We decided to mark all our articles with the name of the guild, and at tho outset arranged that our work should bo divided between tho Red Cross and our chaplains. However, acting on advice received, wo sent woollen goods to tho Countess of Liverpool Committee, with tho idea that it is policy to help to keep our men well by providing them with warm and dry garments Such things as bed socks, girdles, • facecloths, etc., have been 6ent to the Red Cross Women's Committee, and parcels of socks, etc., have been posted by our president, regularly, direct to .tl» chaplains at the front."
In the report the matter as to whether tho men in the enmp should be provided with socks, comforts, etc., is discussed, and the point is made that the men while in the. New Zealand camps are well provided for by the authorities awl their own people, and, moreover, have, not tho rigours of a European winter to face. "With', regard to tho men at the front, the report goes on to say, it is quite impossible for a guild of this size to provide every Catholic man ou active service with socks, and it would be obviously unfair to discriminate as to whom should be the favoured ones. Tho parcels of goods sent to the chaplains are distributed by him to whom ho thinks fit.
"To June 1 of this year wo have made 1C73 articles. Of this number 200 have been sent to the Bed Cross -Women's Committee, 770 to the Countess of Liver- \ pool Committee, and 70} direct to our. chaplains. ' Of this total, 1184 were socks. Of these 557 have been forwarded per the Countess of Liverpool Committee, and 633 pairs to our chaplains. Roughly speaking we have purchased 59110 skeins of wool. Of this, about illOO skeins havo been worked up, while 600 skeins are still iir hand. The stall held by the giuld on 'Our Day' brought in'i277, and at the two dare at tho Bed Cross Shop the takfngs"havc been .£lO7 and J257 respectively, making a record on each occasion. The next dav will be on November 30, and it is hoped that all will do their best." The report concluded with thanks to all workers and sympathisers. The formal motion ot the adpption or the report and balance-sheet was made by the Kcv. I-'athor Hun-ley and Mr. Uirl-ing-Butcher, the former making a stirring appeal to all to this work for.the soldiers. The executive officers were Jill re-elected with acclamation 4mong those wbo were present was the Rev. Dean Holley.
