HATA.ITAI CLUB'S REPORT. • 'Nio annual-report of the Hataitai Howling OTuh states that tlio membership of the club totals 83. hoing an increase of four over last year's members, made up of 74 playing membore and 9 non-playing members. As a direct result of tho -war tho directors havo felt it inadvisable to hold tho winter socials that wero tho source of considerable incomo in the past. This, together with increased cost of ne«B- - labour, soil and. fertilisers required, to maintain tho green in its present fiiio l condition, makes it necessary to ask members to cheerfully assist tho club by agreeing to an increase in the annual subscription. The annual deficit from I,lm above causes may he set down as between XSS and £30, aud this can only bo met by the individual help of members. The directors report a. great improvement of the. erecn during the sea-son, which they attribute to the great amount of work and cave given i,o tho green by Mr. Avis, the caretaker. Tho Wellington Centre voted a jjri?.& to the best-conditioned, and playing green in the centre, and the first prrao was awarded, to the Bataitni Club. Tho various bowlers who attended tho tournament nnd played on the green wero universal in their praise of its playing qualities. Owing to the continued stress of tho war no social functions had been held during tho season. A very successful Bed Cross bazaar was arranged under tho management of Jfr. and Mrs. Pilkmgton and a, committee of members and their lady friends, resulting in tho sum of £133 being handed to tho Mayoress. Other collections for various' patriotic funds wero also made.

THOHNDON OLBIS. Tlio animal report of tho Thorndon Club states thai, iho club is ,stUl in about tho samo Jinaueial position as last year. In tho statement of receipts ami expenditure it is noted that the year commenced witli a. credit balance, of £69 17s. 3d., wiiicji was increased to £'/2 10s. 3d. at tho close of the year, leaving a small balance to credit on the actual year's transactions. This is considered satisfactory in view of the non-incrcaso iu the membership., and iho additional expenditure in wages, etc. A new fresh, leaso has becii granted to tlio Thorndou Croquet Club for another term at a rental of £150 per annum. With tlio prospect of having a greatly-improved green, and an influx of ne-.v members, tno club's financial position should bo materially improved, during the corning season. Tho report of tho Green Committee slates that tho green played, very well at the beginning of tno season, although, still suffering from the ravages of the grass grub. Unlortoumtcly, however, tho caretaker ieft, and tho cominittco had the greatest difficulty in securing a, suitably man for the position, no less than live men being tried. As a consequence tho green sultered, and towards tho end of tue season wad anything but good. This was further aggravated by the unusually <try weather. The same remarks apply to the lower green, leased to the Urouuct Club, but tno ladies recognised tno disabilities under which tho committee was labouring, and accepted the position with good grace. The season was closed a, liwlo earlier than usual, to enable the- top-drcesiug and sowing to bedouo beforo the cold weather set. iu. An expert was engaged to do this work, which was duly completed in good time.
