MORE HEAVY RAIN

AN ALL-NIGHT DOWNPOUR. 'As it was a N week before, so it was' on Saturday night. That is to say, rain , fell very heavily for many'houtrs in the city and suburbs to the overburdening of the already well-soaked earth. Saturday night's big rainfall was, however, rather different in character to its predecessor. . It commenced diffidently under windless conditions. All. day long phantom sections of . 6ea-mist .floated through the i Heads and over-the hills, weaving fantastic pictures, against the bT.ie-black Rides of the Orongorogno mountains. The , sea was glaesy smooth, and the atmosphere uncannily clear. Tho rain began to fall, lightly at first, soon after 4 p.m., and after a couple of hours' drizzle it gradually increased in weight until it . was teeming down, evenly and solidly, unhampered by wind, without any sus- • picion of break. The downpour continued steadily throughout tho night. By day- ■■. break yesterday a southerly wind had . assumed the velocity of a full-powered - gale. The air became polar in its keen-ness,-and the raia still fell in blinding ■ showers. Towards, midday the gale ap- . peared to be taking off,-arid little bits of ' blue appeared to relieve the dull grey - pall overhead, but the wind rose again , later. The afternoon was cold, but freer \ from rain. r i Thanks to the good.flushing given the storm-water drains during the previous . week-end, no damage of note was reported from Saturday's and yesterday's big rainfall.
