MONEY IN HERBS

Melbourne*, June 7. The.ro is in Victoria a man who makes a profit of over .£6OO per annum by growing tho thyme, sage, and marjoram I which is used to flavour sausages, black puddings, and other commodities ot tho kind. This information was given yesterday afternoon at a meeting of tho Housewives' Association, the members'of which had met at tho Town Hall with a view of supporting the thrift campaign and to rcceivo suggestions as to how economy in living could be studied. According to Miss Evaua (Ballaratj, who described tho herb farm kept by Jlr. Morgan .it Napoleon, near Ballarat, the culture of herbs would, in tho hands of capable women, bo a fairly lucrative one, and, considering that it was an out-of-door industry, it would not entail much demand on ono's strength. Mr. Morgan practically commands the herbgrowing industry of the Commonwealth, and he declares that ho cannot supply anything liko tho amount of thyme, sage, and marjoram which tho butchoring trado alone demands. Thirty years ago ho was himself a butcher and grew such herbs as ho required, in his own business, but ho found there was mote money in his garden than in his shop. This successful grower, said Miss Evans, considered tho industry ono peculiarly suited to women who aro equipped with brains, patience, and energy. Mot much land is required, and it need not bo rich, and ono aero would probably be found to vield u l"aii - return.
