Tho Supremo Court was occupied today hearing a claim for damages, before Mr. Justice Donuiston and a special jury of twelve. Alexander Robert Wallis, timber merchant, Dunedin, claimed from .To. seph Mandel, proprietor of the United Service Hotel, Christchurch, JC2200 us damages for a lift accident, which occurred at tho hotel on January 7. The statement of claim Bet out that plaintiff, was a. boarder at the hotel, arid requested tho man in charge of the lift to convey him to his room on tho third floor. The man opened tho lift gate, plaintiff stepping in, but the lift was not there, and 'he- sustained sovero injuries. i'or the defence Mr. Raymond said ho intended to call medical evidence to show there was no reason, to suppose that plaintiff would suffer any permanent injury. Br. Stanston, who had made a thorough examination of tho plaintiff, said that; plaintiff Lad roado marked progress since- tho time ho first saw him. He did not consider tho nervo cent.ro wag injured, lior did ho consider plaintiff's longevity had been materially impaired. Tho hearing had not concluded vhon tho Court adjourned, and it will bo resumed to-morrow.
