NEXT YEAR'S ESTIMATES RATES STRUCK Estimates of receipts and expenses for 1917-18 were submitted to the Uity Council last night. Expenditure: Street works, £10,81o; scavenging and street watering, £12,000; Fire Brigade, £11,741; Jiutt Road mainte&ance, £4002; war expenditure, .£2OOO. Water Rate.—Receipts, ~£43,509. Expenditure: Laboui, £11,000; interest on loans, .£22,328; sinking fund, ,£3700. Hospital and Charitable Aid Rate.— Receipts, «£1t>,720; expenditure, .£13,571 Tramways.—Completing cars U6-J26, .£0700; new plant, £15,(100; Constable Street extension (completion of booster contract), £1130; Lnxford Street to Duppa Street duplication, £1000; removal.centrepoles, Adelaide Road, £500; additional negative feeder cables, .£1000; land for .widening, including cost of alterations, £2000; extensions to power supply system, ,£1500; war pay allowances, £5000; final payment to Mirainar Borough on purchase of line, £1053; inclined lift, Jvolburn, £1000; total, £-10,933. Estimated profit on working for year, £10,000; depreciation fund (less £5000_set aside for renewals), for year, £14,500; estimated overdraft at Jlurcli 31, 1918,' £19,203.
It was decided that rates for the year should be struck as follows:—On unimproved value: (a) General, 2 l-1.0d„ producing £97,705; (u) city improvement interest, 29-200 d., producing £3557; (a) library, 17-200 d., producing £3913; . (b) sanitation loan interest, No. 1, <19-200 d., producing £9507; (b) sanitation loan interest. No. 2, 7-200 d., producing £1358; (b) consolidation loan interest, 20-200 d., producing £3594; (c) Melrose improvements loan interest, G3-200d„ producing £1810; (d) outlying districts' drainage interest, 140-200(1., producing £5161. On annual value; (d) water, 2J per cent, producing £27,200; (a) hospital and charitable aid (last year's rata was 3 2-Sd.), 3 1-Sd., producing £16,720. Total £1,2,992 (a)"-Levied on Greater Wellington; (b) levied on original Wellington City only; (c) levied on Melrose only; (d) levied on Melrose and outlying districts only.
