Hmdmorsh, Napier 109-18-91 79 12 over Mrs. Roberts, Hokitika U9-19-ICO 85 14 over Other cluba that have reported on tho match are:—Otago, Nelson, \Vaiwetu, Mastcrton, Wanganui, Maungakiekie, Hamilton, Invercargill, Grcyinouth, Feilding, Danncrirke, Wellington, Hawera, Greytown, Inglewood, Balclutha, and Lyttelton. Of these, some half-dozen wero unable to take part in tho competition, owing cither to the absence of playors with tho necessary handicap, or to tho fact that their links wore not In condition for play. The others arranged for a day late in the appointed week, and having tho misfortune to encounter bad weather tho match had to bo abandoned, or tho Ecores made under suoh unfavourable circumstances were 'thought too poor to send in. Seeing that clubs now have tho choice of a day in a, given week, for this competition, it would always bo advisable to select it in tho early part of tho week, and thus give themselves a chance of postponement should tho day first selected provo too bad for play.
Many of the returns sent in this year were made in by no means ideal conditions, especially those from the North Island, where excessive Tains havo made the links Tory heavy. Consequently the scores <vro not quite up to the standard of previous years. Hitherto the competition has always been won by a player who has beaten the "par." In the first four years, before handicaps had steadied down under the L.G.U. system, players won by an average of six strokes below "par.," but since then, except for a runaway victory in 1915 (this being 8 strokes below "par") the winners have put up very steady records, winning by 2. 3, 1, 3, strokes below "par.",' This year the winner. Miss Helmore, of Ohristchurch, wins at "all square."
The previous winners of this challenge trophy havo been !1i59 Stephenson, Jfew "Plymouth; Mrs. Winterbournc, Otaki<; Mrs. Murphy, Hutt; Miss S. I'ayton, Auckland; Mrs. O'Qallaghan, Timaxu: MiES Petrie, Hokitika, after a tie with Miss Bayly. Maungakiokie; Miss Budd, .Timaru; and Miss Gambrill, Miramar. There has been only one tie in the series of matches, and only one cM), Timaru.-has held the trophy twice.
N.Z. Ladies' Championship. It has been unanimously agreed, on a vote by the president, vice-presidents, and clubs forming the Ladies' Golf Union, to 'definitely postpone the championship meeting till after the conclusion, of tho war.
