WIDENING MANNERS STREET
PRESENT TOSITION. At last cvenng's meeting of tiic Wellington City Council tho following recommendation was received from tho Finance Committee:—"That they havo further considered tho petition from a number of citizens praying that the council permit tho lessees of tho Turkish Baths, in Manners Street, to earrv on tho undertaking until at least other baths can be substituted, referred back to them at tho last meeting of tho council. The commititco aro still of opinion that it is inadvisablo to disturb existing conditions in regard to tho occupancy of the Turkish Baths during the present war, but tho tenants of the baths will require to enter into an undertaking to give np possession of that portion of tho land to be leased- to Mr. Gilmer when required by the conncil to do so. Tho committeo recommend that the area of land now covered by the buildings occupied by Messrs. Ross and Company and Hall respectively, together with tho old police station, be reserved as an open 6pace, and in connection with the proposed extension of tho Royal Oak Hotel building, that the elevation of the eastern side be in accordance with the requirements of tho CityEngineer; further, any door openings to be made on the eastern sido bo only for lire escape purposes. They havo also considered the question of tho future nso to which tho land will be put. the City Engineer having prepared a plan in the matter.
The council agreed upon the earlier portion of tho report, hut ns there were I some differences of opinion respecting tho latter portion tho matter was left ovc.r till nest meeting.
